我也就抱抱他,对他说:“I love you, too。” 我也还是抱抱他,对他说:“I love you, too。” 这次,他没有马上跑开,却说:“I love you, five。”

I believe there are parents here who do not understand Mandarin. I shall now say something in English.

Marvin Minsky, the renownoed computer scientist in artificial intelligence, has said that learning is the most important aspect of intelligence. Without learning capability, a robot can never be as intelligent as a human being. I told a story earlier about my 2nd child. The story illustrates how children learn by association, very often carried out in their subconscious minds. That's why an environment is so imporant during a child's learning. That's why my parents had chosen Nanyang for me and my sisters and why I in turn have chosen Nanyang for my children. Three yeras ago, I stood by my choice and declined the offer to transfer Erlun out of the school, gifted class or no gifted class. It was a very difficult decision for us but we have not regretted it.

I am therefore very pleased to know that Nanyang will start gifted programme from next year onwards. This means that parents of the selected children would not have to spend sleepless nights debating whether they should transfer their children out of the school of their first choice. You might have heard of other reasons of the Ministry's decision to start the programme in Nanyang, I think you know what I mean, but I would like to believe that the explanation I gave the Ministry on my decision three years ago has had some positive effect on it.

Over the six years Erlun has speng in Nanyang, the only thing i wished the school had done more was the instillation of his awareness of the less fortunate people so that he could more readily show his care or love for others. In the school's extra-currila activities, there were excursions to the zoo, to the Science Centre, to Sentosa, etc., but there were no visits to homes for the children, the aged or the underpriviledged. I am therefore again veyr pleased that Nanyang has taken steps in the direction of helping our children to become more concerned citizens by donating all proceeds from the sale of the greeting cards printed out of the pupils art selected from the exhibition held last week to the Community Chest of Singapore.

I came to Nanyang to teach a computer class to p5 pupils for a few weeks earlier this year. I have since come to appreciate primary school teachers more. Believe me, teaching university students is so much easier. For one thing, you don't have to speak at the top of your voice continuously just to keep their attention.

May I invite all parents now to join me to express our sincere thanks to the Principal and the teachers at Nanyang for having done an excellent job in preparing our children for their next phase of learning.

Thank you, Madam Ho. Thank you, teachers.
